Barnard Early-Career Faculty Fellow, Anthropology

Job Summary:

With Barnard's longstanding commitment to diversity and equity, the Faculty Diversity and Development (FDD) Committee and Barnard College, Columbia University in New York City, seeks three, full-time Early-Career Faculty Fellows to spend two years (beginning July 2025) contributing to, and gaining from, the rich community of research, teaching and praxis of Morningside Heights, where Barnard College is located. The Barnard Early-Career Faculty Fellow program is a two-year residential fellowship welcoming of early-career scholars from social backgrounds under-represented in academia. The fellowship is designed to help expand the number of under-represented scholars who are hired into tenure-track positions by providing them with the experience, skills, and accomplishments necessary to succeed in the highly competitive application process.

Job Description:

This complement of extraordinary early-career scholars will play an active role in a vibrant scholarly community and fully participate in the life of their academic home at the college. Faculty Fellows teach two undergraduate courses (or their equivalent) relevant to their scholarly interests and experience, conduct research and scholarship in the candidate's discipline, and receive mentoring and professional development support from the department/program, college, and university. departmental mentoring and College-wide professional development support. This is a two-year position beginning on July 1, 2025, with teaching responsibilities during the standard academic year from September through May.

Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology welcomes applications for a Barnard Faculty Fellow whose scholarship is focused on Indigenous sovereignty, broadly understood. Contemporary Indigenous communities around the world are working towards sovereignty over territorial rights, cultural property, research and data, and more, addressing various forms of historical dispossession. We are interested in applicants whose work critically engages these struggles through a sustained long-term connection with one or more Indigenous communities.

The Department of Anthropology is well equipped to host and mentor a fellow. From across the wider Barnard and Columbia campus, the fellow would benefit from the presence of colleagues specializing in Native American and Indigenous Studies. We will work to mentor the fellow through book and manuscript workshops, collaborative symposium design, grant-writing, practice job talks, and course development.

Terminal degree in a related discipline, with all requirements for the degree completed by the time of hiring offer.

Salary: $75,000

This salary for this position is fixed and non-negotiable. Barnard Early-Career Faculty Fellows are benefit-eligible and eligible to apply for $4,000 annual Faculty Research Grants.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
