Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey is seeking a Community Outreach Specialist for the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research. This position manages people and/or teams affiliated with Community Outreach. The Community Outreach Specialist works with investigators at IFH to develop community outreach strategies tailored to specific research projects as well as IFH broader goals of community engagement. The Community Outreach Specialist also Implements health education programs through community presentations, seminars and workshops, using in-person and virtual methodologies.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Works with team members and community stakeholders to plan, organize, implement and evaluate community engagement and outreach activities.
Performs community level engagement and outreach needs assessment.
Participates in community advisory council and work group meetings and focus groups.
Researches, identifies and utilizes evidence-based educational programs.
Writes, designs, and manages the production and distribution of visually appealing, culturally and literacy appropriate educational programs (i.e. content for brochures, e-newsletters, program development, event materials, info graphics), media press releases, and other communications/marketing materials.
Participates in phone, electronic, and in-person communications and meetings with outreach-relevant partner contacts, subject matter experts, and professionals to support the development and improvement of programs.
Serves as a liaison with potential partners, partners, and others with community outreach and engagement-related inquiries.
Participates in preparation for, and attends community outreach and engagement-related meetings and events.
Takes meeting minutes and prepares typed notes and action items.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in Community Health, Social Science, Behavioral Health or a related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
A minimum of (5) years of related experience in a community organization, non-for-profit, faith-based community groups, business office, government agency or university setting.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver's license would be required for this position.
Effective oral, communication and writing skills. (multi-lingual preferred)
Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
Excellent analytical, organizational, communication, writing and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge and understanding of community health, health disparity, health equity, public health, healthcare, and health education principles and practices.
Strong interest in promoting population health and building community, academic, and policy bridges to improve the health and wellbeing of NJ populations.
Existing deep roots and connections to community partners, policy makers and key stake holders and relevant under-represented racial/ethnic groups
Five years of community outreach research experience and public health research experience conducting community-based research.
Sets up and uses audio-visual equipment (e.g., projector, computer, speakers)
Troubleshoots minor technical configuration issues (e.g., connection issues between computer and projector) at events and meetings.
